When Res Publica co-founded Avaaz, they had a goal of making a happy world where tolerance and good governance prevail. Avaaz, founded in 2007, is considered by many as the most influential online activist network in the world. The group promotes global activism, and mainly focuses on issues such as human rights, animal rights, conflict and climate change. What are some of their achievements? How are they liberating the world?
Fight for animal rights
The issue of ivory trade has been a dilemma for a long time. Governments have been working ceaselessly to end the trade. Unfortunately, some of these efforts are pretentious as some of the cartels involved in the trade are within the governments. Other agencies genuinely want to stop the trade, but political sideshows quickly thwart their efforts. Avaaz has been in the forefront to push for the end of the brutal killing of elephants for ivory. They sent a petition to European Environment Commissioner, Karmenu Vella, and all European governments to urge them to close the trade in Europe.
Avaaz has also been pushing petitions aimed at saving Vanquitas. The group has been pushing Mexico to ban the ‘gillnets’ that trap and threaten to end the Vanquitas.
The world is still hesitant when it comes to the issue of gay marriages. Some countries are embracing it, but there are other countries where being gay is illegal. Countries like Russia still harbor a lot of hatred for the LGBT community. Avaaz has been fighting against the torture, and crackdown on gay people in Chechnya. They have been conducting online campaigns to ensure the world accepts and respects the gay people.
These are just but a few efforts and achievements by Avaaz. If you visit their site today, you will realize that their determination towards a better world has no limits.
